[drmchsr0] Nitroplus Fridays – feat. Hanachirasu [Orange Farm Archive]

(All art by Minami except for the first one, which is by Tsuji Santa, who is is probably one of the Nitro+ artists. I am NOT going to post porn.)

While it’s not that rare that I touch visual novels and eroge, it has been a long while since I have actully tried one. Largely due to developments in the community I wholeheartedly disapprove of (and oppose, and no, it’s not the success of JAST and Mangagamer. It’s about certain people in the community rising to power, and unpleasant people. That’s a whole other article.), I’ve not touched visual novels.

So a friend of mine asks me to play Hanachirasu, one of Nitroplus’ least popular titles to date. I’m not exactly obligated to do a short writeup on this, but I’m not that horrible of a person to NOT introduce this interesting game.

The game is set in an alternate historical timeline, where Japan is not atombombed, but invaded by both Russian and American forces. Much like how the Korean War played out (replace China with Russia), Japan is split into two, with America taking Okinawa and Russia taking Kyushu and Shikoku. Which leaves the mainland in the middle unoccupied.

…Which doesn’t go as well as the Japanese had hoped. Their Soverignity may have been assured, but Asian pragmatism kicks in, and Japan is slowly becoming a coporate entity, losing all semblance of history, culture and whatnot.

In steps Ishima Kaigen, someone who sees the rot and realizes something has to be done. He (at least up to where I’m at) takes over Tokyo and forcibly imposes the learning of all things Japanese, and boots out everything else. Which of course includes firearms of all sorts. He would also move the administrative capital somewhere else, leaving Tokyo a forgotten, lawless frontier town (of sorts) after his death.

This is where our story starts. In lawless Tokyo, where martial arts schools are common and armed crime even more so, there is a young man. Takeda Akane is his name, and his goal in life is to fight someone who is on equal footing with him. And he’ll get it, no matter what. Even if he has to lie, cheat, steal, manipulate and murder 100+ people in order to get it. He wears (using the term as loosely as possible here) a crimson kimono, and wields a katana which has drank the blood of innocents and guilty people alike.

But who is his desired opponent? It is Igarashi Yoshia, the man who has mastered a legendary technique, said to be impossible to learn. His reason for doing so? Revenge. He wants to kill Akane, who has done something reprehensible in the past.

It’s a dark, disturbing tale, showing how a man’s drive leads to horrible consequences. Akane himself doesn’t have much of a conscience. He’s willing to do just about anything to get his fight. Yoshia himself is no angel either. He forcefully squelches his conscience in order to take his revenge.

There’s a lot of other disturbing stuff, too, but blood, gore, and highly descriptive fights are the least of it’s worries. Let’s just say that there’s a lot worse in it and move on.

Personally? I find it… … … interesting. Interesting enough to recommend it to people. But it’s not exactly something I’d recommend to newcomers to visual novels. It’s not a must-play on anyone’s list, but it is good enough to warrant at least a playthrough. Though your mileage may vary.

See you next week!

I may actually be endorsing a type of “Article XXX day”. Though I love to write about the visual novel scene, and it is probably my favorite part about being an otaku – rare is it that I’ve played one as of late. Maybe running such an article would motivate me to play them more.

We’ll look into this after all of our upcoming changes of course, hfuhfu.
