[DesuFag] Mimic the West [Orange Farm Archive]

Remember way back to your nostalgic youth.  You’d come from school and watch shows like Mighty Max, Tail Spin, Duck Tales, and Darkwing Duck?  And how you’d wake up on Saturday mornings to watch your Hanna Barbara cartoons like the Jetsons, Quick Draw McGraw, and the Pink Panther?  Or maybe you watched Looney Toons.  Do you remember when you enjoyed Western style Cartoons?  If so, this post is for you.

Meet Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, Panty and Stocking for short.  Panty and Stocking is from the producing staff of Tengen Toppa Gurren Laggan, and is also the brain child of Studio Gainax.  Apparently, they wanted to mimic a western style cartoon, down to the 12 minute half-stories that make up a large part of our cartoons.  Even the art style, save for a quick jaw-dropping tranformation scene is a western style reminiscent of the PowerPuff girls.

Panty is a slut, and I don’t give two fucks about this fact.  I’d still hit it.

The show follows two angels who are far from angelic.  Panty is a complete slut (this is actually a humor device in the show; she fucks like five guys in the first “episode”) who is very outspoken and brash.  Taking off her panties allows her to tranform them into a Desert Eagle.  Stocking, on the flip-side, is a cake loving, long-haired girl who dresses in a gothic lolita style.  Her stockings can tranform into a katana.  Together they must collect the Heaven coins from the evil ghosts around town.

Stocking is a goth.  I’d still hit it.

Westernization is abound in this show.  The OP and ED and even insert songs are in incredibly good English, and several phrases in the actual show are said in blatant English.  If a dub is made for this show, I would watch it and not care.  Another thing is the humor.  The humor is largely western slapstick, and in a show already laced with westernization,  only serves to reinforce that this is not anime.  Split these into two stories that even get western style title screens for each half-story, and wrap it up in PowerPuff Girls art, and you got yourself a nice little package.  This is that one cartoon your mother would not let you watch as a kid, so you watched it whenever she wasn’t around.

I actually had to check the animation studio to make sure this was an animu…

Shortly after its airing, forums everywhere (including my home of /u/ and /a/, and even /sp/) exploded  with praise and/or criticism for this show.  My own view is that Gainax has a nice show here that reminds me of my childhood days of waking up at the crack of dawn to watch five hours of cartoons on the WB and Cartoon Network.  I was initially appalled at the fact that Gainax, best known for bringing us Evangelion and TTGL, could make a western style cartoon.  That feeling was very quickly lost in the awesomeness of this show.  This show is very entertaining, as long as you have a little kid still left in you.  So, if you want a dose of your childhood, go watch this show.  It’s some good stuff.

(Author’s Note: Due to the highly episodic nature of this show, it probably will not get any further blog entries, unless something major happens, or either myself or another writer gives it a review.)

Gainax is pretty much just making fun of the American Industry. In that sense, it’s meant for a Japanese audience. I think one would more likely want to watch it to see how far they’ve come from crappy cartoons. They’re definitely trolling us.

Though it seems even Gainax can’t resist a transformation scene.

Even so, 20/10 Gainax, would watch again.
