PokeMon Black&White: A Look Back, and a Look Ahead [Orange Farm Archive]

If any of you still keep tabs on the phenomenon that swept the world by storm in the late nineties, you may know that today is the day that the newest generation of PokeMon games is released at 11:00AM EST (12:00AM JST, 9/18/2010).

Before we get to the main point, first a little introduction to this article.  Back in the late nineties, the PokeMon series became a worldwide hit, spawning a hit tv anime that still airs today, a TCG card game, several manga series, and most importantly, it all came from a Gameboy game.  PokeMon Red/Blue/Green/Yellow.  I obtained my copies of RBY a year after the main craze hit the states in 1998.  I instantly fell in love with the series, and the games.  PokeManiac DesuFag was born.  When Gold and Silver came out, I got them as well, and started the long process of training once more.

In 2001, for a large part, my PokeMon games were forgotten for a while.  That is, until a friend got me a copy of Ruby and Sapphire four years after I had stopped playing R/B/G/Y/Go/S/C.  All five third generation games (R/S/E/FR/LG) refueled my fire, and I was collecting and training PokeMon as fast as I could.  Diamond and Pearl, Platinum, and HeartGold SoulSilver games swept me off my feet with their beauty and gave me a trip down nostalgia road.  Pokemaniac DesuFag is back, and training harder and with more fervor than before.

My bros, GARaptor and Pidgeot

So, when the fifth generation was announced, I was ecstatic.  I had to endure many hardships on the way to this release day.  I went through the agonizing months of living on CoroCoro news, and small tidbits from PokeMon Sunday.  I had to go through the Wottergate scandal (Starter evos being fake or real, turned out to be real).  The hardest part was that no leaks occured in the final days, that is until Amazon.jp sent their orders out early on the 14th.

What some of you may be thinking right now…

The new generation of PokeMon also veers slightly astray from the first four.  The first four generations were all based on a region of Japan, and paid tribute to the geographical area.  The PokeMon also had an Earthly feel to them.  GenV is not a region in Japan, it is based on New York City, and the PokeMon have much more of an abstract feel, yet it’s still fits the generation location.  Yorkshire terriers, Quetzalcoatl, a Shogun Sea lion, flaming boar, Lanterns, a USA themed Eagle, and an Eqyptian Sarcophogus make up a small portion of the new 156 PokeMon, bringing the grand total to 659 as of now.  Even the player characters have changed.  The PCs are no longer around age ten.  The new PCs are somewhere around age fifteen, and are drawn to look it.  From what I’ve been hearing, the storyline may also be darker as well.

PokeMon Black and White also takes PokeMon gaming into a new direction with the social aspects too, such as offering Co-op play via Hi-Link, triple battles, a refined GTS, and possibly, a battle frontier.  The inclusion of a “Dream World” in game still mystifies as to what its purpose actually is, but I suspect I’ll figure that out when my copies arrive sometime over the weekend.  It feels like Game Freak is trying to take PokeMon for a spin in a new direction, and I’m feeling like I should grab hold and go along for the ride.  Who knows, it could be a fun one.

Trainers gunna train indeed

Authors Note: Also, if previous generations are to be followed, the third game should be called PokeMon Gray, and if the previous two gens are to be accurate, a third Generation remake should be coming up, which means I can relive the games that restoked my fire on a 3DS.  Awesome!

US release date is in the Spring 2011, so it’ll be a while before my next PokeMon post.  Til then, smell ya later!
