Results of the Seventh Touhou Popularity Contest [Orange Farm Archive]

The results are in!

The 7th Touhou Popularity Contest has officially ended, and the results have been posted to the page. Here are the top ten/fifteen results, with commentary.

Characters – 33,449 Votes

1. Reimu Hakurei – No real surprise here – she’s been topping the popularity rankings for a while now. Dammit Reimu >o<

2. Sanae Kochiya – And Sanae pulls an upset over Marisa! *crowd roars* She shot up in popularity quite a bit after Touhou 12, so I guess it comes as no surprise.

3. Marisa Kirisame – Though, they both pulled ahead of Sakuya, another frontrunner. Marisa takes third after a ridiculous 3 point difference over Sakuya.

4. Sakuya Izayoi – The fourth main character of the post-PC98 Touhou series. Not a big surprise here either.

5. Remilia Scarlet – Remilia has been pulling fifth place for quite some time now, making her the most popular non-main character for a while now. She was very close to beating out Sakuya, though.

6. Alice Margatroid – Alice beat out Yukari and Mokou this time around, and with Yuka and Satori taking 7th and 8th, only Mokou remains in the top 10.

7. Yuka Kazami – Yuka has seen a dramatic rise in the rankings recently, and this time, she beat most of the old favorites. Maybe ZUN will fold and make her a main character once again? [/vainhope]

8. Satori Komeiji – Somewhat of a surprise was Satori getting into this position – she’s the most popular character introduced since Touhou 11, it seems. No one else came close – Utsuho is down in fourteenth place(which was still an improvement for her).

9. Fujiwara no Mokou – Manages to clinch the top ten again after a very small difference in points from Satori. Was my favorite choice <3

10. Flandre Scarlet – Flandre grabs tenth place, leaving the other two behemoths, Yukari and Yuyuko, in eleventh and twelfth.

Other Notes: What? Only one of my favorite characters got into this. Cirno was way down in 23rd; she’s been dropping for the last couple years… Yuyuko was 11th and Patchy was 16th. …I can’t actually remember who else I voted for, though. And unfortunately for Komidol, Suika dropped to 27th place. :/

Music – 28,110 Votes

1. Septette for the Dead Princess – A huge favorite for a very long time, this song takes first place for the second year in a row. In my opinion, it’s probably the best song in Embodiment of Scarlet Devil.

2. Bloom Nobly, Cherry Blossoms of Sumizome ~ Border of Life – Yuyuko’s theme takes second for at least the third year in a row. Another great song, though there were a few others in Perfect Cherry Blossom I really liked, like Aerial Capital of Flowers and Phantom Ensemble.

3. Emotional Skyscraper ~ Cosmic Mind – Did anyone really think this song wouldn’t do extremely well? I actually think this song was better than every single final boss theme to date. It rounds out the 1-2-3 of final boss theme popularity, putting U.N. Owen back into its place.

4. U.N. Owen was her? – An Internet fad song more than anything, it seems. It hasn’t fallen very far in popularity since EoSD came out, so.

5. Shoujo Satori ~ Third Eye – Satori’s theme rounds out the top five again, beating out Necrofantasia by a good margin. This was no surprise, since it’s been a very popular point for arrangers.

6. Necrofantasia – One song I really do like, though my opinion isn’t shared by much of the community. Though this is a popularity contest, not a “which do you think was actually the best” contest, so dBu’s arrangement might have had something to do with it.

7. Solar Sect of Mystic Wisdom ~ Nuclear Fusion – Okuu’s theme moves up a bit this time around to take seventh place.

8. Native Faith – Another great song, but it’s been dropping in popularity recently. Give it another year and it’ll be knocked out of the top ten.

9. Reach for the Moon, Immortal Smoke – Mokou’s theme is pretty cool, I guess, but it always struck me as fairly repetitive. Ah well, it makes a great ringtone. :3

10. Faith is For the Transient – Sanae’s theme bumps its way up into tenth. This song has been a focus for arrangers as well, with Sanae’s inclusion as a playable character in UFO.

11. Phantom Ensemble – Another great song that’s been falling in the ratings. ;-;

12. Gensokyo, Beloved by Gods – Hovering around its normal place here. This is another very strong force in the arrangement world.

13. Shanghai Scarlet Teahouse ~ Chinese Tea – To this day, I don’t understand why people like this song so much. In terms of being a good song, I suppose it beats a good number of others, but…

14. Hartmann’s Youkai Girl – Rose in rankings. I love this song only for dBu’s arrangement of it.

15. Suwa Foughten Field – The fifth final boss theme song in the top fifteen – that’s ten if you include EX bosses’ themes. Very good choice, though.

Worth noting that Heian Alien was next. It’s a weird song though. There are a couple of other interesting tidbits. History of the Moon and Love Colored Master Spark, both amazing songs, have dropped quite a bit. But Wind God Girl, a personal favorite, dropped from 9th to 20th. Also important: Bokura no Hisoutensoku – the “super robot” song from Hisoutensoku, and my personal first choice – managed to grab 21st. XD At the End of Spring got 27th, and I’m only telling you this because it’s my favorite song from UFO.

Survey – 22,245 Submissions

And now for the Touhou player survey results!

Male to Female Ratio: 90.66% to 9.34%. Good to know that there are at least that many female players, I guess. Though a lot of them probably don’t even play the game.

Age Range: 39% of players were in the 20~24 year-old range. 15 to 19 year-olds made up about 34% of the census, with 25~29 year-olds were about 16%.

Play Results: The most played Touhou game remains Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. Second and third – separated by a difference too marginal to count – were Perfect Cherry Blossom and Imperishable Night. About 60% of the people taking the survey had played UFO. 90% of the people filling out the survey have played all of the post PC-98 games.

Game Popularity Ratings

Touhou 12 got about 82% votes in the 4-5 range. 12.3 got almost exactly the same amount. >o< Bougetsushou didn’t fare as well, but managed to get mostly 3-5 votes.

Where Did People Learn About Touhou?

33.46% of people said they had learned about it from a friend – 27.77% said they had seen it on Youtube or Nico Video. Not surprising. None of the other results really matter.

When Did People Learn About Touhou?

Most people who took the survey learned about Touhou between the times 10 and 11 came out – that is, August 2007 to August 2008. The vast majority of people learned about it somewhere between December 2006 and August 2009. I was in the last category, since I got into it right after 11 was released.

What Do People Like About Touhou?

84.78% of everyone said that the music was one of their favorite parts of Touhou – the original music, not the arrangements, mind you. The characters’ popularity contributed to 74.61% of people. The world setting was third with 40.14%, with fourth and fifth being its fun factor as a shooting game and the consumer side of derivative works – reading doujinshi, playing doujin games, etc.

And that’s that. It is worth noting that more than 10,000 more people voted for some part of the survey than last year. So, I guess the popularity contest is growing in popularity. *shot*
