Touhou Anime Review [Orange Farm Archive]

Oy Reimu I found this Touhou Anime!

Comiket 75, I love you.

Every half a year the biggest anime con in the world – Comiket – takes place, and every half a year I am givin a reason to live again.  Doujins rain from the sky, anime announcements run rampant, and this year – we are awarded with a Touhou fan-made anime by the folks over at Maikaze.

While Darkslime is a much bigger fan of Touhou than I am, I do enjoy IaMP/SWR(the fighting spin offs of the series), and watching the bullet hell of the games.  The community around Touhou likes the same things I do (delicious Reimu armpits) and the doujinshi is normally either erotic or comedic.

There is definatly no reason not to like Touhou.

OSake whar?

If you have no idea what I’m talking about, this is a good start.  While that in particular is a remix of the music, ZUN (the series creator) made Touhou as a way to debut his music (which I find to be very appealing), but eventually the games became his life.  He’s known to be an alcoholic, and all his characters are lolis.  He for the most part works on these games himself.  Good man.

My favorite characters from the series are Remilia and Suika, and they were both present in the anime.  The art style was different, but I think it fits ZUN’s original character design well enough.  For a fan project this was amazing.  While the transitions were weak and some of the facial expressions were a bit obvious, it was likable and not a total failure.

Donations whar?

Canned Dog reported the voice cast, so I guess I’ll link all the voice actors to their ANN page so you guys can have a nice list.

Hakurei ReimuNakahara Mai (Nagisa, Clannad)
Kirisame MarisaSawashiro Miyuki (Aruruu, Utawarerumono)

Shameimaru Aya
Fujimura Ayumi (Kokuto, KnK /Kannagi, Kannagi)
Patchouli KnowledgeTakahashi Mikako (Chrono, Nanoha A’s)
Izayoi SakuyaTanaka Rie (Suigintou, Rozen Maiden)
Remilia Scarlet Tsuji Ayumi (Elise, Sky Girls)
Ibuki SuikaToyosaki Aki (Yoshino, Miname-ke)
NarrationInoue Kikuko (Ayano, Kaze no Stigma)

That’s a pretty good team.  I don’t know if the VA’s did this to add something to their reputoire and charity, or Maikaze actually payed them out of pocket money, but regardless it worked out well.  The VA’s didn’t seem intrusive, though I had a different impression of Marisa.  Reimu and Suika’s fit very well.

Blood of mongrels whar?

Loved Remi.  I would have loved her anyway.  Hey, does anyone else think the Gilgamesh x Remilia Doujin’s could topply over all the other C75 doujins?  SCAN PLEASE! Anyway, The op was done very well and the opening music wasn’t bad.  I was surprised to see that there was an opening sequence at all.  Maikaze really put their hearts into this one, and it shows.

Overall the episode was comedic, light hearted, and didn’t intrude on the character design.  I think alot of people were expecting a train wreck, and this is a welcomed result.  Considering it’s origin, it very easily could have gone another way.  I don’t have a huge heart for it, but on the fan made anime scale, it gets a 12/10.  Pretty amazing job.  Something I will say I missed though, is the pure vulgarity of the series.  Reimu is very ready to call Marisa a bitch when she gets the chance, and overall, the series itself is intended for a slightly older audience.  This episode could easily be rated G.

Professional budget whar?

The combat scene felt slightly rushed, but I guess in the Touhou series they really do tend to fight over everything.  Kept true to the source.  It was sequenced well, while watching I didn’t notice any lack of combat effects – but when looking at it frame by frame trying to find a picture, I realized it was rather cheap.  Kudo’s to them though, they certainly didn’t make it feel out of place and managed a halfway decent combat scene on their budget.

Remilia doujins whar?

Looking forward to episode two.  Let me know if you guys found any Easter Eggs >;3.  I’m sure I’ll make a H.U.G.G.L.E. for a bunch of C75 material next week.  Enjoy the New Year and expect a big post on midnight, Jan 1st, 2009!  In the meantime I’ll be brushing up on my Touhou.

My main complaint was it was too short. The opening theme seemed a little weak and unenergetic, as well.
Voice casting/acting and character… (characterization?) both came out great.

Overall I’m just amazed it didn’t suck. Like I said, for a normal anime, this is pretty meh, but for a fan made animation production, it’s pretty amazing. And it looks like there is going to be a second one. I think it’s a nice thing for the Touhou community, so they don’t have to bear the shame other animations have brought franchises. To top it off this isn’t even professionally made.

If I was Zun, I would just invest in Maikaze, have a hand in writing/production, and just make an anime. Imagine what these guys could do with a budget.

I don’t know if it works like that. XD

Anyway, the seiyuu cast was perfect. All the voices were spot-on, except maybe Sakuya’s, but hers made sense once I thought about it. The animation was *great* considering this is a doujin anime, which I’ve never actually seen before.

The fight scene was kinda cool, but why did they go after Patches first, of all people? She never leaves that library, much less the mansion.

Overall, it was really good. The opening song was meh, but again, for something fanmade, it was good.

Also, Cirno’s silhouette was in the eyecatch, she better be in the next episode D:
